Abstract

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has become a valuable tool in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pancreatitis. The high resolution images provided can identify the parenchyma and ductal abnormalities that characterize the disease. In appropriate cases EUS can effectively establish or exclude the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis. Like all other diagnostic tests, EUS can be impacted by the pretest probability of each individual case. The role of EUS in chronic pancreatitis is changing as this modality progresses from a primarily diagnostic role to one of therapeutic intervention. Established interventional EUS techniques include celiac block and transmural pseudocyst drainage. The techniques used to achieve pseudocyst drainage are being modified to allow EUS guided treatment of panreaticobiliary or gastric outlet obstruction.
