Abstract

European industrial heritage as tourist destination potential. Recently, attempts at creating industrial heritage trails or routes with a decidedly European focus abound. In the following it is argued, that these concepts mainly link objects at a European scale that are still nationally embedded. They do not emphasise specific dimensions of Europeanness, i.e. sites, processes, events or crises of crucial importance from genuinely European perspectives. In the following, relevant issues are discussed from a conceptual point of view, complemented by proposals for a strategy change.
