Abstract

The first European meteorological satellite was Meteosat-1 launched in 1977 by the European Space Agency (ESA). Since then EUMETSAT has been established as an independent organisation to ensure the continuity of European operational meteorological satellites. Meteosat-4 now provides the operational service. Meteosat-5 and -6 are being made ready for launch. EUMETSAT is presently preparing plans to ensure the continuity of operations in geostationary orbit and for new systems in polar orbit. In addition ESA is preparing earth observation satellites which could form the basis for future operational systems.
