European Studies in Hong Kong-Context, Structure and Subtext

Abstract

This is the revised and extended version of a lecture given at the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Fu Jen University (14 December 2004). The paper presents basic approaches to the planning and implementation of European Studies programs in the region. It discusses in detail the undergraduate European Studies course at Hong Kong Baptist University, its context, objectives and curriculum structure. Particular emphasis is given to the factors which led to its success over the last ten years. The paper argues for a multi-disciplinary, regionally adapted focus of European Studies rather than 'European integration studies', as they are currently favored by the European Union and the Chinese government.
