Abstract

Lack of standards for communication between health care applications is one of the primary reasons holding up the wider use of information technology in health care. In order to develop the required standards, CEN (European Committee for Standardization), acting on a CEC mandate, created two project teams for initial investigations and established the Technical Committee 251 on Informatics. As a result of the studies of the project teams, about 50 digerent work items have been ident8ed for standardization within the next two years. Medical image interchange will be dealt with in a working group called Imaging and Multimedia. Ten work item are related to medical image interchange. As far as applicable, the proposals for standardization made by the project teams are based on the ACR-NEMA Standard.
