Mr Laing's paper Musique sans frontiers? was an apt opener for the conference, surveying the shifting influence of Anglo-American rock on European national charts, and ending with a note of optimism for the future of Eurooriginated music. Mike Jones, with Big in Germany brought a professional musician's perspective to issues of cultural imperialism, with the experience of being in a band (Latin Quarter) largely ignored in the UK but, er, big in Germany. The third of the trio of pre-tea presentations was Michael Christianen's meticulous exploration of channels of international music distribution in the Netherlands, Congested Conduits.
