Abstract
In combatting Panonychus ulmi (Koch) in New York apple orchards, the most effective treatments are those applied after new growth has appeared in the spring but ahead of bloom. Tests were done during this period with petroleum oil, a combination of oil + ethion, Fundal® ( N -chloro- o -tolyl)- N-N -dimethyl formamidine hydrochloride) and Galecron® ( N -'(4-chloro- o -tolyl)- N-N -dimethyl formamidine). The experimental plots consisted of single blocks of trees-minimum of 1 acre-and treatments were applied with an airblast sprayer in a manner closely approximating grower practice. Seasonal mite control was obtained with both oil sprays applied at the ½-in. green-bud stage. Addition of ethion to oil did not increasc control efficiency against the overwintering mite eggs. In the ease of Fundal and Galecron, timing was critical. Best results were obtained with applications made at the pink-bud stage.
