Abstract
My subject today is European Information Technology policy. I shall first look at the legal basis for Community action in IT. I shall then enquire why the Community needs to take action specifically in this sector; why IT is unique. I will then describe the specific Community policies in IT concentrating on the largest programme, ESPRIT. I shall conclude by giving my views on the future of European Community Policy on IT.
