Abstract
Review of European Environmental Law, 3rd Edn, edited by J.H. Jans & H.B. Vedder (Europa Law Publishing, 2008). From its humble beginnings as little more than a by-product of European economic integration without a formal basis in the founding Treaty of Rome, environmental law has over the past 35 years undergone a remarkably prolific development, emancipating into a central area of EU regulation. In the decades since the adoption of the first EC environmental action programme in 1973, the EU environmental policy field has taken shape as an exceptionally dense network of legislative, administrative, and jurisprudential standards. Concomitantly, the body of scholarly texts on European environmental law has grown exponentially, creating a market for competing legal textbooks on this salient subject. Professor Jan Jans, one of the longstanding leading scholars in this field, has claimed an early and impressive stake in this competitive market with the publication in 1995 of the first edition of his characteristically soberly-titled monograph European Environmental Law. Since then, particularly following the publication of a revised and updated second edition in 2000, this work has established itself as an authoritative source for scholars, practitioners, and perhaps particularly for law students.
