Abstract
A great deal has been written about European defence and security highlighting the challenges offered by the contemporary security environment. It is thus enlightening to read an article which approaches this well‐worn path from a slightly different perspective. Alyson Bailes here analyses the reasons for the peculiarly British approach to European defence, proceeding to examine the four central tenets of policy. Operating in this new global policy market is, as the author notes in her conclusion, interesting for the range of dilemmas, opportunities and challenges it presents.
