Abstract
The fates of the bison and the Forest have been linked inseparably throughout the time in existence of both. Thus changes in the Forest were reflected unfavourably, not only in the tree stands themselves, but also among the animals (most especially the ungulates) those stands sustain. Nevertheless, the Forest is rightly renowned worldwide for having retained its original character at least in part, making it possible for a wealth of plants and animals to survive here (if often not elsewhere) up to the present day. The Bialowieza Forest is in fact a contiguous forest complex of 1500 km2, albeit one that is bisected by the fenced state border between Poland and Belarus. The eastern part is in fact the larger of the two, covering 850 km2, while the Polish part is of 650 km2.
