Abstract

Michael Ching, a lower sixth student, and I had sent our competition entry for `Europe Towards the Stars' on the last possible day, so we were pleased not only that we had won the prize of a week's professional astronomy at the European Southern Observatory, but that the Headmaster was allowing us go to Munich in November. The other winners arrived: they were from Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Finland! Teachers and students quickly bridged the language barriers - English is compulsory at ESO - helped by a common interest in science and astronomy in particular. Some of the staff had very little knowledge of astronomy, others like René from Bayeux, a school principal, had helped build a solar radiotelescope and Mogen from Copenhagen runs a 16" reflector with CCD camera at school.
