Abstract

Parliamentary examination of the “final” draft of the European Bioethics Convention published on June 6 (see Lancet, June 15, p 1686) has confirmed the impression that further issues are being side-stepped in order to clinch agreement after 10 years of debate. Earlier decisions by the convention's drafting committee had determined that the main convention should stick to basics–and that detailed rules should be spelled out in protocols to be agreed later.
