Abstract

The European Radiation Dosimetry Group EURADOS comprises more than 50 institutions and a few hundred of scientists actively involved in the dosimetry of ionising radiation. EURADOS stimulates collaboration between European laboratories, especially those of the European Union and associated states. EURADOS was conceived in 1981 to advance the scientific understanding of the dosimetry of ionising radiation, to facilitate the access to unique irradiation and research facilities, and to coordinate research in dosimetry which is scattered in many, in some cases very small, institutions in numerous European countries. These latter aspects became particularly important after European unification, which followed the fall of the iron curtain. Annual meetings, which include the General Assembly and working group meetings, are important instruments for exchanging information and managing the EURADOS network. It has been a tradition for many years that the Annual Meeting includes a scientific symposium on current issues in dosimetry and radiation protection. The Annual Meeting 2005 took place at Kraków on 19–21 January 2005 at the facilities of the Institute of Nuclear Physics, IFJ, and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, PAU. On this occasion the scientific seminar was dedicated to two issues: the results achieved by the different EURADOS working groups within actions sponsored by the European Commission (EC), and current problems in dosimetry for medical applications.
