Abstract

Abstract Chromosomal diversification within genera has been a focal point of plant evolutionary studies. There are two prime reasons for this interest. First, chromosomal change imparts a partial or complete barrier to interspecific gene exchange. Second, chromosomal traits may provide clues to the relationships of species. A considerable amount has been written about the nature of chromosomal change. This chapter deals with alterations in the chromosome complement that are due to chromosomal rearrangements or an increase or decrease in genome size. Changes in chromosome numbers. due to rearrangements are discussed below, whereas those related to polyploidy are discussed in chapter 6.
