Abstract

A comparative study of explicit semi-Lagrangian and Eulerian schemes is carried out in the context of ocean circulation problems. We propose the explicit semi-Lagrangian schemes to overcome some computational difficulties possessed by the standard implicit semi-Lagrangian ones when they are used in ocean general circulation models formulated in spherical coordinates. The numerical comparative study of the new semi-Lagrangian schemes with Eulerian schemes, which are used in many ocean models, is performed on problems whose solutions are representative of relevant ocean circulation features.
