Abstract

We use superspace methods to modify the superspace geometry of D = 10, N = 1 supergravity in order to obtain a theory that includes all Euler characteristic terms for D ⩽ 10. We also discuss how the effective action for the massless fields of superstrings can be used to extract information about the auxiliary fields of ordinary D = 10 supersymmetrical field theories. A particular O(α′) term obtained in our superspace formulation is compared with a heterotic string calculation.
