Abstract
This is an essay on the life of Leonhard Euler and his achievements in theoretical mechanics. We also discuss some topics related to the development of Euler’s ideas and methods, such as divergent series and asymptotics of solutions of nonlinear differential equations, ideal fluid dynamics and Hamiltonian systems, vortex theory of systems on Lie groups with left-invariant kinetic energy, energy stability criteria, and Euler’s problem of two centers of gravitation in curved spaces.
