Abstract

The construction of mathematical models is now a part of almost every scientific discipline, from nuclear physics to demography and from meteorology to macro-economics. This article argues that the credit for inventing the technique, and the distinction of having used it for the first time, belong to the Greek astronomer and mathematician Eudoxos, working on the problems of planetary movements in the 4th century BC.
