Abstract
Throughout the European Union (EU), the situation for women scientists is dire--on average, men outnumber women by around 20 to 1, according to a new European Commission report that, for the first time, pulls together statistical data from all over Europe. Besides fueling the gender debate in the EU with hard data, the report also sketches out several recommendations to offset the imbalance, such as more meticulous bookkeeping for gender-disaggregated statistics, better access to public records, and an affirmative action approach similar to that in the United States.
