Abstract

The Raman spectra of stage one graphite-fluorosulphuric acid intercalation compounds were determined using specially treated samples to avoid the presence of adsorbed acid on the crystal surfaces. From the frequency shifts of the symmetric vibrations it appears that the free S-O bonds are longer in the intercalated acid than in the liquid acid. This can be explained by a decrease in the extent of (p → d) π bonding. A model of the internal structure is proposed.
