Abstract
The predominant conformation of anthracene derivatives bearing OCH 3, NR 1R 2, COR groups at the 1 or 9 positions has been ascertained using NOE data and lanthanide shift reagents. Whenever a lone pair in OCH 3 or NR 1R 2 group is directed toward a peri proton this proton is deshielded. The magnitude of the peri effect induced by various substituents is given. The downfield peri shifts parallel those previously observed in naphthalenic and phenanthrenic compounds.
