Abstract

Founded by the Prémontrés in 1131 in a little church whence the name Locus-Restoratus, the first abbey was in roman style, similar to a Cistercian establishment. The main building contained the vestry, the chapter room, the scriptorium and the dormitory on the upstairs floor. On the east side was an infirmary. During the 13th century, the white cannons had to rebuild this abbey, because the ground was very boggy. The new building, in Gothic style, was much longer than the previous one and there was a perpendicular structure with the toilet in the infirmary area. During the Hundred Years War, this abbey was destroyed around 1430. It was rebuilt during the 15th and 16th centuries, but only the church and the main building with all the functions rooms. The church is in flamboyant gothic style with a beautiful rose-window on the façade. The Religious War in the 16th century and the commendam at the beginning of the 17th century impoverished the abbey and around 1700 the cannons rebuilt a new main building in the classic style, with a cloister and a hostellerie, the church not being altered. After the French Revolution, the abbey was destroyed during the 19th century and the church was used as a factory and then a farm. In 1964, an association formed and it has been working since then to preserve this old abbey.
