Abstract

STUDY OF QUENCHING EFFECTS AND EXCITING EFFECTS IN LIQUID SCINTILLANTS BASED ON DIOXANE The authors studied scintillation yield and quenching effects of dioxane liquid scintillants containing a primary solute (PPO or PBD) on deaerated solutions as in presence of air. We measured quenching effect of dioxane radiolysis products, in particular of ethanal; quenchers that act because of their positive electron affinity show a less important effect on dioxane-PBD solutions. At last, reaction mechanism of naphthalene that is generally present with high concentration in these liquid scintillants based on dioxane is studied.
