Abstract

The West European market for engineering thermoplastic (ETP) compounds returned to growth in 2002 with consumption reaching over 1 million tonnes, according to the latest research from AMI Consulting. Looking at developments in the use of polyamide, PBT, PC and acetal compounds in Western Europe, AMI's research showed that following a 3.4% decline in 2001, ETP compound demand showed a modest gain in 2002. The downturn in 2001, was the first decline in the market since 1993, the result of weakening demand in electrical goods and mobile communication markets. The upturn in 2002 came about despite the fact that passenger car production fell by more than 3% illustrating the tendency for engineering plastics to be developed in new applications in the car industry at the expense of other more traditional materials.
