Abstract

This volume is a by-product of a symposium on the etiology and morphogenesis of congenital heart disease that took place in September 1978 in Tokyo. As stated in the preface, the book deals with genetics, chromosomal abnormalities, normal cardiac embryology, experimental teratology and clinical-pathological-embryologic correlations of developmental interest. Basic research and its clinical applications also are considered, as well as the latest recurrence risk figures for the various types of congenital heart disease to be used in genetic counseling. One can gather from these prefatory remarks that this book has no conceptual unity, but represents a collection of 22 independent chapters written by 48 contributors from America, Europe, and Asia. Consequently, the articles are of differing quality and of different value to various readers.
