Abstract

π-Bonded ethylene species are formed on bare Pt(111) at temperatures lower than 52 K and on Cs-, K- and O-precovered Pt(111) at 95 K. These new species are almost undistorted compared to gaseous ethylene, with the exception of ethylene coadsorbed with O atoms. UPS shows molecular orbital shifts in agreement with the electrostatic field existing in the vicinity of the adatoms.
