Abstract

Flowers are terminal structures that evolved to eventually produce a fruit containing the plant offspring. Most of the flower organs are ephemeral and are, therefore, programmed to die as part of the developmental program of the plant. This program controls the life span of individual cells or organs in response to both endogenous and external factors. Flowers are, therefore, useful organs in the study of factors and genes involved in determining life span and cell death.
