Abstract

AbstractEthylene release from Pinus thunbergii Parl. seedlings was examined after inoculation with virulent and avirulent isolates of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Enhanced ethylene release was observed only in seedlings inoculated with the virulent isolate. The avirulent isolate induced necrosis of xylem ray cells and embolism in some tracheids, however, the cambium and outermost xylem was intact where water conduction was maintained. The ethylene increase coincided with cambial death in seedlings inoculated with the virulent isolate.
