Abstract

Ethylene oxide 12% with dichlorodifluoromethane 88% at 18.1 kg/28.3 m3 under sustained vacuum for 4 h killed all stages of Lasioderma serricorne (F.) exposed in hogsheads of tobacco to depths of 30 cm. Neither air washing the hogsheads prior to fumigation to loosen the tobacco nor breaking the vacuum with air to improve penetration increased the mortality of insects deeper in the hogsheads. Also, extending the exposure period to 6 or 8 h did not increase effectiveness of the fumigation. The minimum concentration of ETO needed to kill any stage of the insect was ca. 7 mg/liter.
