Abstract

Mathematical concepts used in diverse cultures, referred to as ethnomathematics, have been extensively discussed in the literature. However, the description of ethnomathematics that was practiced in designing the traditional Malay house of Sambas has not been explored. The goal of this research was to use ethnomathematics as a bridge between culture and mathematics to describe the mathematical principles found in the Sambas Malay traditional house design. The object of the research was ethnomathematics in the design of the Sambas Malay traditional house. The sort of research used in this study is exploratory. The data was gathered by observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study reveal that the Sambas Malays apply geometric concepts in traditional house design.
