Abstract

Our previous examinations of the relationship of socioeconomic status (SES) to specific psychiatric disorders using data from the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) Epidemiologic Catchment Area Project (ECA) did not include results regarding race and ethnicity (Holzer, Shea et al., 1986). While at least one paper (Somervell, Leaf, Weissman, Blazer, & Bruce, 1989) has presented ECA findings separately for Hispanics and blacks, it did not explicitly address SES per se in relation to ethnicity or race. The present chapter thus attempts to systematically examine the joint relationship of ethnicity and SES to psychiatric disorder.
