Abstract

Abstract This empirical chapter investigates how ethnicity influences responses to new political issues. Using diverse quantitative data, the chapter explores the significant impact of ethnic minority views on shaping general ideological tendencies for both minorities and majorities, influencing individual and political parties’ stances on related issues, such as immigration and European integration. By analyzing individual and party perspectives, the chapter shows that attitudes toward immigration and European integration are closely linked with views of ‘otherness,’ generally developed in the context of how one sees ethnic minorities. The chapter further delves into how ethnic heterogeneity shapes the formation of political preferences of majority populations, showcasing the influence of ethnic minority presence on individual-level political views across ethnically homogenous and heterogeneous countries in the region.
