Abstract

L'A. analyse les complexites, habituellement negligees, de l'histoire indigene amazonienne. Il montre que, dans les theories anthropologiques courantes, l'excessive focalisation sur les materiaux issus de l'ethnographie contemporaine et sur les seriations ceramiques a conduit a l'elaboration de schemas pseudo-historiques censes rendre compte du developpement culturel dans ces regions. L'A. decrit avec precision les transformations des societes indigenes entre 1500 et 1900, particulierement en reference a l'ecologie, l'epidemiologie et ses reseaux d'echanges materiels.
