Abstract

This examination focuses on patterns of involvement with religious, sport-related, community, cultural, and political organizations by individuals of different ethnic groups, aged 15 years and older in Canada. The sample used for the analysis was composed of 17,109 respondents drawn from the microdata files of the 1997 National Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating (NSGVP). Findings suggest the presence of processes of ethnic differentiation in terms of propensities for organizational involvement in Canada. Substantial levels of involvement were observed for individuals reporting Dutch, British, German, and other European origins, while these were notably lower for those of Canadian, Chinese, Southern European, and Canadian&French origin. Significant ethnic variations also were found across categories of organizational types, gender, and single and multiple choices of involvement.
