Abstract

Estimates of the singulate mean age at first marriage for the different ethnic groups in Canada are provided by employing the Hajnal procedure. While the Japanese males and females are characterized by the highest age at first marriage, the males and females of British origin have the earliest entry into wedlock. Age specific first marriage rates have been presented for the four major ethnic groups in Canada with the help of the Krishnan-Robert model marriage tables. The known social correlates of marriage are unable to account for the ethnic differentials in the age of first marriage in Canada. It is then concluded that the differentials might have emanated from the value system and norms derived from the parent cultures.
