Abstract

Genomics is hailed as the solution to many of the healthcare challenges of our generation. In the UK, where morbidity from most infectious diseases has been dramatically reduced for decades, inherited conditions have taken on a new prominence. Analysis of the human genome by the oft-cited Human Genome Project is seen as the door to a technological world where drug therapy will be made more effective by the use of pharmacogenomics, and where treatment of disease with gene-based therapies will be a realistic option.
