Abstract

The deaths of multiple hospitalized geriatric patients during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 may be the most widely reported incident related to the ethics of managing an older, frail population during a disaster. The seventh floor of Memorial Hospital was leased to an acute-care nursing home company, and these patients were extremely frail. Some readers may recall the headlines accusing staff of actions leading to the deaths of these elderly adults when the hospital was surrounded by floodwater and the power cut off.
