• The understanding of professional ethics in teacher education was analyzed. • Norwegian teacher students and teacher educators were interviewed. • Professional ethics was reflexive, integrated, and nuanced. • The perspective was on the teacher's character and student relations. • The societal conditions for professional ethics were not examined by the informants.
