Abstract

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) predominantly occurs in older individuals secondary to increasing comorbidities, higher incidences of diabetes and hypertension, and increased overall longevity. As the number of elderly patients facing this diagnosis continues to increase, clinicians are often faced with ethical dilemmas and treatment challenges regarding the risk-benefit ratio of dialysis in this population. This chapter focuses on the unique ethical issues and challenges which should be considered when making decisions regarding treatment of ESRD in the geriatric age group.
