Abstract

In this paper the authors explore the ethical dilemmas raised by independent practice, and offer some practice suggestions. Five major areas of concern are addressed: professional identity, quality control, accessibility to clients, interface between private practitioners and agencies, and enforcement of standards. The Standards for the Practice of Clinical Social Work prepared by the Provisional Council on Clinical Work in 1984 are used as a basis for the discussion of these five areas of concern.
