Abstract

Abstract Evidence-based patient choice brings together the movements to promote evidence-based medicine and patient-centred medicine. While proponents of evidence-based medicine contend that interventions need to be based on evidence of effectiveness, patient-centred medicine is concerned with emphasizing the central role of patients in decisions about their care (Parker, 2001). Evidence-based patient choice may help to address the power imbalance inherent in many medical consultations and may serve to promote more effective patient care (Hope, 1997).
