Abstract

Intergenerational reminiscence projects have a variety of benefits for both student interviewers and older participants. At the same time, work of this type is not without risk. The purpose of this presentation is to provide instructors in the planning stage of a student-based reminiscence project with a suggested framework for managing the ethical issues they are most likely to encounter. We first describe three basic ethical principles developed within the context of research with human subjects: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice (Belmont Report, 1979). We then discuss how these principles can be adapted for student-based reminiscence projects. Specific issues addressed include informed consent, confidentiality, and fairness in selecting participants.
