Abstract

Abstract Supervised clinical experience is a key requirement for the development of professional competence in clinical neuropsychology. The primary goal of supervision is to promote the professional development of trainees, which enhances the effectiveness of neuropsychological services, protects patients and the public, and benefits the profession. Establishing and maintaining professional competence is a primary ethical responsibility of supervisors and trainees. In addition to being competent neuropsychologists, supervisors should be competent in providing supervision. Effective supervision is established and maintained in a proactive, deliberate, and thoughtful manner. Supervision can be a very rewarding process when both the supervisors and supervisees attend to the relevant ethical issues. This chapter describes the ethical and legal foundations of supervision for education and training in clinical neuropsychology.
