Abstract

High urinary calcium and oxalate levels, as well as the lack of crystallization inhibitors, are the typical factors in the formation of calcium oxalate crystals. The spesia populnea (T. pop) and Lantana camara (L. cam) are two plants best known for their alcoholic preparations, which have anti-inflammatory, antiurolithiatic, analgesic, anxiolytic, and diuretic properties. In the present study, we examined how ethanolic extracts of the chosen plants affected hyperoxaluria-induced nephrolithiasis in the rat model. The animal groups administered with plant extracts (at 400 mg kg-1) depicted a rise in the levels of urinary oxalate, calcium, albumin, and urinary pH. Furthermore, total plasma protein levels increased along with urea nitrogen, oxalate, and creatinine blood levels. The statistical analyses of the experiment showed that the ethanolic extracts significantly reduced hyperoxaluria. The beneficial effects of the chosen plants in managing hyperoxaluria and its associated health complications could be further investigated through the isolation and identification of possible plant constituents.
