Abstract

Abstract Cross sections are calculated for the reaction 2H(γ, η)2H. The calculation includes an impulse term and rescattering terms which are obtained by a reduction of a covariant formalism. Modern vertex functions and a realistic deuteron wave function are employed. Calculated 90° cross sections are at least a factor of two smaller than the existing data. The calculated angular distributions indicate that future experiments can determine the reaction mechanism and isolate the cause for the disagreement with theory.
