Abstract

We summarise recent progress in theory and experiment towards understanding etaprime meson interactions with nucleons and nuclei. Highlights include the production mechanism of etaprime mesons in proton-proton collisions close to threshold, the etaprime effective mass shift in nuclei and the determination of the etaprime-nucleon scattering length in free space.

Highlights

  • The last 20 years have witnessed a dedicated programme of experimental and theoretical studies of low-energy η′ interactions with nucleons, nuclei and other mesons

  • The η′ meson is special in QCD because of its strong affinity to glue

  • While pions and kaons are would-be Goldstone bosons associated with chiral symmetry, the isosinglet η and η′ mesons are too massive by about 300-400 MeV for them to be pure Goldstone states
