Abstract

A second family of organic materials that exhibit superconductivity was found in ET salts, ET representing bisethylenedithio-tetrathiafulvalene (alternatively abbreviated as BEDT-TTF). Its chemical structure is displayed in Fig. 1.1. These compounds have characteristics quite different from the first generation of superconductors, (TMTSF)2X. The ET molecules form salts with various monovalent anions, but their compositions are remarkably varied, as represented by the shorthand (ET)mXn. However, most of the ET superconductors are of the 2:1 composition ratio like (ET)2X, although their crystal structures are of a large variety. Among the ET salts, there are several quasi one-dimensional conductors, but most of them are already non-metallic at room temperature.
