ABSTRACT | Introduction: Issues related to the physical, psychological and social welfare of elderly people are relevant for the people who plan health, educational, working and social security policies in several countries. This research is based on the importance of an investigation about the conditions which support good quality of life during the old age, considering their scientific and social importance. Objective: to analyze and compare the quality of life of the elderly who live in a home for old people and the ones who don't, within the municipality of Vila Velha, ES. Methodology: Quantitative approach, applying the WHOQOL-BREF, an instrument for measuring the quality of life; a physical exam routine was also used, along with a demographic-social form. Among the interviewed people, 13 of them live in a house for old people and 39 of them don't. Result: Considering the Social Relations, the people who do not live in such homes had better results; considering the Environmental aspect, the ones who live in homes for old people had a better quality of life. It was also possible to notice the connection between the psychic aspect and the Environmental, Social Relations and Physical-Psychological aspects. Conclusion: One could state that the quality of life of elderly people who live in homes designed for them and the quality of life of the elderly who do not live in such places are similar. The fields of quality of life are different, though. However it does not change the quality of life as a whole. Keywords | Quality of life; Aged; Homes for aged.
