Abstract

Context: The treatment of carotid stenosis aims to prevent the possible ischemic brain damage. Carotid stenosis surgery is not without risk. Objectives: Evaluate and discuss in comparison with the literature, the results of patients submitted to open carotid stenosis surgery in four hospitals in a medium-sized municipality in the state of XXXXXX. Method: Retrospective study, carried out by the survey of 68 electronic medical records, in four hospitals from January 2014 to July 2018. Data referring to the variables: age, symptomatology, sex, time between symptoms and surgery, degree of stenosis, comorbidities, outcomes and surgical indication were compared with the literature. Results: The mean age was 69.3 years, 60 symptomatic, 46 males, with a mean of 70.2 years and 14 females with 66.5 years. Eight asymptomatic, 7 males with a mean of 71.1 years and a female with 57 years. Fifty-two were operated on early and 8 after ninety days. All submitted to endarterectomy, with general anesthesia and only two without shunt. Seven patients (10.3%) had major complications within 30 days, four (5.9%) stroke, 1 (1.5%) AMI and 4 (5.9%) died, two of the perioperative stroke group . Conclusion: Asymptomatic patients undergoing the procedure had no major perioperative complications. Those with severe deficits and delayed surgery did not benefit from the surgery. The rates of major perioperative complications are similar to those found in the national literature and higher than in controlled studies.
